Letterboxd has become a hit phenomenon for film lovers everywhere. After all it is, “The social network for film lovers.”

According to the Letterboxd website, Letterboxd let’s you …

  • Keep track of every film you’ve ever watched (or just start from the day you join)
  • Show some love for your favorite films, lists and reviews with a “like”
  • Write and share reviews, and follow friends and other members to read theirs
  • Rate each film on a five-star scale (with halves) to record and share your reaction
  • Keep a diary of your film watching (and upgrade to Pro for comprehensive stats)
  • Compile and share lists of films on any topic and keep a watchlist of films to see

I vividly remember during my freshman year of college in 2021, my friend Danielle introduced me to Letterboxd – to set the scene: we were in downtown Eugene, heading to the Broadway Metro. As someone who is Type A and a film lover (and binger), an app that allowed me to keep track of all the films I have watched was a match made in heaven. This is exactly why I love Letterboxd, in addition to the interaction with friends and other fans. I also like adding films to my watchlist, so one, I remember, and two, to have in my back pocket when I want to watch something new.

When asking my friends and fellow Letterboxd users why they enjoy using Letterboxd, they said:

“I really like seeing what other people enjoy watching and getting to look at funny reviews. It’s fun to keep up with my friends and what they are watching.”

“I love keeping up and sometimes stalking my friends and seeing what is going on in their lives, and what they’re watching. It’s also validating when I hate or love something that everyone else did too.”

“I like keeping up with what all my friends are watching but the best part about it is the collective expression about movies that you don’t get to see often.”

At the beginning of the school year, me and my roommate, Willow, watched a movie. After the movie was over, I logged my review into Letterboxd, as I do. Willow noticed and asked me what I was doing, and I jumped at the chance to introduce Letterboxd to her. She immediately downloaded the app and started adding all her films, which was fun to watch.

I also enjoy following the Letterboxd Instagram as they post fun and exclusive content related to all things film and Letterboxd. One of my favorite segments is when they interview people from the film industry, including different actors, actresses, directors, producers, (and so on), and ask their top four favorite films. For context, the main page of your profile on Letterboxd allows you to put your top four favorite films. Here is a recent one!

It offers a unique glimpse into the tastes and influences of these famous people within the film industry, and it creates a sense of camaraderie between fans and people they admire. Plus, in my experience, it often leads to discovering new films or gaining insight into the creative minds behind the performances we love. It further opens the doors into the cinematic world, where everyone, from fans to celebrities, come together to celebrate the magic of film.
