Last term in my J352 Strategic Writing & Media Relations class, my professor, Courtney Munther, prompted us with a unique icebreaker question: Who is your favorite account or person to follow? @guywithamoviecamera, AKA Reece Feldman immediately came to mind.
I don’t typically follow many celebrities or influencers, although, within the last two years, Reece has become one of my favorite creators to keep up with. He posts mainly video content on TikTok with 2.3M followers and 125.9M likes on the platform. He began his career making behind-the-scenes videos as a production assistant for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Soon enough, his videos began to gain traction, and other productions recruited him to create exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
When asked to describe his job in an interview with the TODAY Show, he said, “It’s getting all these really great beats, like the old DVD special features, just shot from me, my point of view, on an iPhone.” He goes on to mention he films TikToks during the time of filming with current trends, in “real-time” and later posts intriguing content for audiences closer to the film or TV show’s release. In my opinion, the authenticity of his approach is a major contributor to his success. People find his content fresh, real, and fun – I know I do.
I’m a sucker for press interviews and behind-the-scenes content using trending sounds or playing off of current trends, like these from the casts of Mean Girls and Madame Web. I enjoy this type of content, with actors and actresses out of their element, off-camera, having fun, and getting fans excited and “those beats,” as Reece said.
In 2022, he was the host of the TikTok Emmys Red Carpet Livestream, interviewing stars from Lizzo, Mrs. Maisel herself, Rachel Brosnahan, to Abbott’s Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph. This has blossomed into other notable opportunities and catapulted his career full-throttle, working infamous events like the Oscars and Golden Globes. Moreover, this past year, Reece attended the Academy Awards for a second year as an Oscars Ambassador alongside comedian and host of the Chicken Shop Date, Amelia Dimoldenberg for the 2024 Oscars.
“It can be anything you want it to be.” TikTok is what you make of it. As noted in the TODAY show segment, his job title didn’t exist when he was born. However, as social media has grown, it has become an integral part of reaching audiences and film and television promotion.
I admire his work ethic and how he essentially created his role – currently unique, but in the future will hopefully take flight. His content inspires me, and I hope to do something similar in my future career.
